My Story...

I am a registered dietitian nutritionist (RDN) in Philadelphia, PA.  I have spent over twenty-five years providing nutrition to critically ill individuals.  Over this time frame, patients have become sicker and sicker.  I have always appreciated the power of nutrition to prevent illness or support people through critically ill periods.  But I have learned to balance longevity with quality of life.  In reality, eating for health has improved my quality of life.  This site is my contribution to supporting you in creating a healthy lifestyle.

I believe that being a member of a community supported agricultural (CSA) organization provides a strong base to support a healthy lifestyle.  I became a member of the Lancaster Farm Fresh CSA many years ago to support my local community and to force myself to eat a variety of fruits and vegetables in season.  My diet completely changed once I started receiving a weekly supply of fresh fruits and vegetables.  Though I previously ate a lot of fruit and vegetables, my variety was limited.  The CSA created a structure for me to fulfill on eating a variety of foods.  Joining a CSA is one way you can alter your environment, your kitchen environment that is, to support you.

I also like to dine out frequently.  Philadelphia is home to many famous chefs.  While the restaurant scene is thriving here and the food is delicious, only a few restaurants provide predominately locally sourced items on their menu.

This venture is an exploration of local farmers, food makers and chefs to support you in your efforts to eat healthy in your home and when dining out.  On the blog, you will find links to recipes that I have used to prepare items from my CSA.  On the podcast, you will hear interviews with local farmers, food makers and chefs about what inspired them and how they use local resources in their home and restaurant environments.

I am an alumna of the University of Delaware (BS in nutrition) and Drexel University (MS in nutrition).   I am an active board member of the Philadelphia Chapter of Slow Food International (a movement designed to provide good, clean and fair food for all) and have previously served on the board of directors for the of Nutrition Entrepreneur’s Dietetic Practice Group of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics.

I have presented locally and nationally on a variety of nutrition topics and have provided professional leadership on a local and national level.

When I am not working, you can find me practicing yoga, riding my bicycle, preparing food from my CSA, or dining out at one of my favorite restaurants.

Cheers,

Jennifer
